A realistic guide to what healing looks like week by week

Jawline filler is one of the most common ways to add definition and balance to the lower face. It can make the structure of the face better, make the profile more balanced, and give the face a more sculpted look.

One of the most common questions patients ask after treatment is:

“Is this swelling normal?”

Knowing how long it will take to heal can make the recovery process feel a lot better.

It is normal for swelling to happen after getting jaw filler. It will go away on its own.

Why Swelling Happens After Jaw Filler

Jawline filler is placed deep along the bone to create structure and support. The body naturally responds to injections with mild inflammation as part of the healing process.

This response is healthy and temporary. As swelling resolves, the filler settles and the final result becomes more refined.

Immediately After Treatment (Day 0)

You might notice the following right after your appointment:

  • Slight to moderate swelling
  • Tenderness along the jawline
  • Little marks from injections
  • Some bruising now and then

At first, the jawline may look a little fuller or firmer than you thought it would. This is normal and mostly because of swelling.

A lot of people go back to their normal daily activities the same day.

Days 1–3: Peak Swelling Stage

The swelling usually increases in the first 72 hours. You may notice the following during this phase:

  • More fullness along the jawline
  • Slight asymmetry due to swelling
  • When you touch the area, it feels firm or tight.
  • A little pain when chewing or smiling

This stage can be surprising, but it doesn’t last long and gets better after a few days.

Days 4–7: Swelling Begins to Improve

By the end of the first week:

  • Swelling starts to decrease
  • The jawline begins looking more defined
  • Tenderness improves
  • Bruising (if present) starts fading

Many patients feel comfortable attending events and social activities during this stage.

Weeks 2–3: Filler Begins to Settle

During the second and third week:

  • The remaining swelling continues to resolve
  • Filler integrates with the surrounding tissue
  • Jawline definition becomes more natural
  • Symmetry improves as inflammation fades

This is when patients begin seeing a more accurate preview of their final result.

Weeks 4–6: Final Results

At about one month:

  • Swelling has fully resolved
  • Filler has softened and settled
  • Final contour and definition are visible

This is why we schedule follow-up appointments around this timeframe when needed.

Why the Jawline Swells More Than Other Areas

The jawline is a structural treatment area that often requires more product than smaller areas like the lips.

More product + deeper placement = more temporary swelling. This does not mean something is wrong — it simply reflects the nature of the treatment.

Tips to Minimize Swelling

After treatment, we typically recommend:

  • Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours
  • Sleep with your head elevated the first night
  • Avoid excessive salt and alcohol for a few days
  • Apply cold compresses gently if needed
  • Avoid massaging the area unless instructed

These steps help support a smooth recovery.

When to Be Patient With Your Results

It’s very common to love your results immediately, then feel unsure during peak swelling, and love them again once everything settles.

We often remind patients: the jawline is a journey, not a one-day result. Allowing time for healing is part of achieving the most natural outcome.
