“Why does my skin feel rough after a treatment that is supposed to make it smoother?”
“How do I know what is normal and when to contact AVIA?”
If you are considering MOXI, these questions are understandable. You want brighter, more even-looking skin, but you also want to know how treatment will fit into your schedule.
At AVIA Medical Spa, we believe understanding recovery is part of feeling comfortable with your treatment. Knowing what to expect helps you prepare, follow aftercare instructions, and recognize when to ask questions.
MOXI laser is a non-ablative fractional treatment used to improve the appearance of uneven tone, sun damage, and texture. Recovery is generally manageable, but your skin still needs time to settle.
How Much Downtime Should You Expect?
You may feel ready for everyday activities before your skin looks completely recovered. Returning to an indoor workday can be different from attending an important event or spending hours outside.
Your recovery depends on treatment intensity, your skin, the area treated, and whether MOXI was combined with another procedure. The timeline below describes possible changes, not a fixed schedule everyone must follow.
Before booking, tell AVIA about upcoming meetings, photographs, travel, and outdoor activities. We can discuss how much visible recovery time to allow and help you understand the instructions recommended for your treatment.
Day 0: Warmth, Flushing, and Sensitivity
Immediately after MOXI, your skin may look flushed and feel warm. Some swelling is possible, and the treated area can feel similar to a mild sunburn. These sensations should be considered alongside the expectations explained at your appointment.
Keep your routine simple. Use only the products and comfort measures recommended by AVIA, and avoid repeatedly touching your face to check its texture. If a cool compress is recommended, follow our instructions for using it gently.
Before leaving, make sure you understand when to begin cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen. Asking these questions early helps you feel prepared when you get home.
Day 1: Redness and Puffiness May Continue
The next morning, pinkness and puffiness may still be noticeable. Swelling can appear more pronounced around the eyes, so your face may look different from how it looked immediately after treatment.
Begin the gentle routine outlined in your AVIA aftercare instructions. Cleanse with lukewarm water when directed, use gentle hand movements, and pat dry instead of rubbing. Apply your recommended moisturizer and sun protection according to your treatment plan.
If you return to work, consider your environment. Heat, sweating, and outdoor exposure may complicate aftercare. Contact AVIA if your symptoms seem excessive or differ from what our team explained.
Day 2: Tiny Dots and a Bronzed Appearance
Your skin may develop tiny dark dots or a slightly bronzed appearance. These dots are called MENDs, short for microscopic epidermal necrotic debris, and represent small areas of treated tissue involved in healing.
They can be easier to see in bright lighting or when you look closely in a mirror. Their appearance varies with treatment settings, and having fewer visible dots does not automatically mean your treatment was less effective.
Continue moisturizing as directed and leave the dots alone. Do not try to remove them with your fingernails, a washcloth, or a cleansing brush. Natural shedding takes time.
Day 3: Understanding the Sandpaper Texture
“My skin looks okay, but it feels rough when I touch it.” This can be one of the most surprising parts of recovery. As treated areas darken and progress through healing, your skin may feel dry, tight, or textured.
The temptation is often to exfoliate because roughness normally signals that your usual skincare routine needs attention. After MOXI, however, your skin needs gentle care rather than extra exfoliation.
- Avoid picking: Leave the dots and loose skin alone rather than trying to lift them away.
- Avoid scrubbing: Use gentle cleansing without brushes, abrasive cloths, or exfoliating products.
- Maintain moisture: Follow AVIA’s moisturizer instructions and ask us if dryness becomes uncomfortable.
Days 4–5: Flaking and Gradual Smoothing
Some treated areas may begin shedding between days three and five, although your timing can vary. You might notice small flakes, less roughness in certain areas, or patches that feel smoother than others.
Healing does not always look uniform. Avoid judging every part of your face against the same timeline, and continue your recommended routine even when some areas seem recovered.
This is also when people may feel tempted to restart stronger skincare products. Looking smoother does not necessarily mean your skin is ready for retinol or exfoliating acids. Check with AVIA before changing your routine.
Days 6–7: Your Skin May Still Be Settling
As the first week progresses, your skin may feel more comfortable and less textured. Some redness can persist for up to seven days depending on treatment intensity, and individual recovery may take a different course.
Think of the timeline as a guide to possible changes rather than a deadline. Your skin’s condition and AVIA’s instructions matter more than reaching a particular day.
If redness is worsening, swelling seems excessive, or your recovery is different from what you expected, contact our team. You should not have to decide whether everything is progressing appropriately without support.
Keep Your Aftercare Routine Consistent
During recovery, a simple routine is easier to follow and assess. Use the cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen recommended by AVIA. Avoid introducing new products just because they are described as soothing or suitable for sensitive skin.
- Cleanse gently: Follow your instructions for when to begin washing, using lukewarm water and avoiding friction.
- Moisturize as directed: Apply recommended products with clean hands, and ask AVIA before substituting something else.
- Protect from sunlight: Use your recommended broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen, generally SPF 30 or higher, alongside shade and protective clothing.
Keep active skincare paused until your AVIA clinician clears it. That includes asking about retinoids, exfoliating acids, and any other products that might irritate recovering skin.
Exercise, Makeup, and Everyday Plans
Avoid strenuous exercise and sweating for at least the first 24 hours. Ask about your specific activities, including workouts, swimming, or time in hot environments, because your treatment may require additional adjustments.
- Makeup may be permitted after 24 hours, but your AVIA clinician may recommend waiting longer.
- Once cleared, apply it gently and avoid rubbing during removal. Remember that makeup can soften the appearance of redness without concealing rough texture.
For important events, discuss timing before booking. Being allowed to wear makeup does not mean your skin will look fully settled, especially after a more intensive session.
